Whether you have a process with injection moulding or extrusion, the plastic granules will usually need to be free of water molecules. Different plastics have different properties, which requires the right choice of equipment. Although the plastic granules are not hygroscopic, they may contain hygroscopic additives, such as certain minerals which cause the granules to require drying.
Several parameters are important to ensure a successful drying process. For example, the dew point that gives a value of how dry the air in the process is and the residence time in the dryer container. Two other parameters are the amount of energy added to evaporate the water molecules in the granules and the air flow needed to convey the moisture from the dryer container to the dryer generator.
It is also important that the consumption or outlet should match the volume of the dryer container. If the outlet is too large, the drying time will be reduced and the granules will not be sufficiently dry. While the moisture time is important to keep in mind, the moisture time is as fast as the drying time, which makes the conveying and residence time after the dryer an important factor in the process.
