Extrusion is a manufacturing process in which plastic granules are melted and formed into a profile via a continuous process. Extrusion works very well for a variety of shapes and is used, among other things, to manufacture pipes, cables, boards or plasticfilm. In extrusion, plastic is pressed through a nozzle or tool in a continuous process. This is different from other manufacturing processes such as injection moulding where the molten plastic granules are pressed in one shot at a time. An extruder can also consist of one or more feeder screws.
When manufacturing takes place in a continuous process, material supply is a must to ensure that the process keeps going. Extrusion often has a higher material consumption than other manufacturing processes, which creates high demands on material handling and reliable conveying systems.
